Founded at the constitutive conference in Manchester on 6 August 1950; affiliated to the International Working Men's Association (IWMA); its activities were coordinated by the National Committee; main object of the SWF was to take part in the struggle for national and international working class solidarity and to improve working conditions; published the monthly paper Direct Action and the series of `Direct Action pamphlets'.

Michels of the Freie Arbeiter Stimme Group (London), Augustin Roa of the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo de España en el Exilio (Liaison Committee in Great Britain), Graham Puxon of the Itinerant Action International, Marc Prevotel of the Fédération Anarchiste, Albert de Jong of Buiten de Perken, A. Ferré of the Association Internationale des Travailleurs (AIT) and others, including letters of support for J. Stuart Christie who had been arrested in Madrid in 1964 on a charge of possessing explosives, 1963-1968, 1971-1973; subscribers' lists of Direct Action 1960-1986; report of the conference of the National Rank and File Movement and lists of its members 1962.
